Vocation for Art aims to become a leading source for artist-career support, guiding them through the complexities of the art world.
In all we do we seek to create extreme value for artists, with a special focus on time and cost saving solutions and opportunities, capable of taking art-careers to the next level.
Regarding making a living from art, we are principally interested in what can work for the many. As effective and relevant the traditional high-end art markets and cultural institutions still are, its just a fact that this system only provides space for a relatively small group. We are therefore strong advocates of transparent ‘direct-trade’. Disruptive art-market models where artists reach out to art-lovers and do business with buyers and collectors directly, without obstacles of any kind.
We want to help artists achieve their business-development goals (marketing, promotion, sales), one step at a time.
Not as self-proclaimed experts with false and empty promises, but professionally by using ‘crowd-wisdom’ and conversational information collection, convinced that the many are smarter than the few. We conducted the most comprehensive research ever been done on making a living from art and researched in multiple languages in a systematical way.
We interviewed more than 1.000 artists and art-businesses from all over the world and now publish valuable goal-orientated information about this.
Vocation for Art is part of NOENGA®, an art brand since 2007 under which a divers range of art projects have been developed.
The idea for this project started in the Spanish Mediterranean city Malaga (Lagunillas art district). Here I found Christin in the middle of a crowd, in an impossible position lying on the ground, taking pictures from the abundantly present street art in this neighbourhood. The beginning of our conversation was about that specific picture, continued about how much art matters to us and ended with the idea about of starting Vocation for Art.
Christin and I are both passionate about the arts, we follow artists on- and offline and create works ourselves. She is into photography and writes poetry in the German language and I have been developing a style to blend acrylic paintings through digital techniques. In 2007 I founded the global NOENGA® Community and currently own the biggest professional art groups on LinkedIn (in the English and Spanish language 150.000+ members). Christin has some of her poems published and realised paid photography projects as well. I sold some of my works to art-publishers. Over the years my network has grown significantly and were appropriate, I sell art to collectors in my personal business network. I do this by connecting the collector directly with the artists, something that both sides often enjoy very much because this way the collector can be part of the artistic process and experience.
During our conversation sharing these experiences, we realised that we have always been very close to art but never really tried to become professional artists ourselves. So, the question we asked each other was, why not? And then a big silence followed… and the thinking began.
This question was as simple as it was confronting. Was it a lack of confidence, a fear for the narrative of the starving artist, of not being good enough? Or perhaps were we using all our creative strengths for our professions, creating value for our customer’s ending-up empty at the end of the day. Whatever the answer is, we both strongly, deeply believe it should be possible to live from art these days in several forms. Also when one is not part of the art-establishment and the high-end art market. And in order to make it happen, one has to overcome whatever negative emotion stands in the way.
So we made a decision that night. We will go the path, explore, research, investigate and learn about making a living from art like never been done before. We will share our conclusions, story and publications and will do this for ourselves and for you.
During the process we hope to learn from all the people out there that share the dream, all the people currently in the same pursuit and the ones that went before us, successful or not. If we share the goal together, we are not alone anymore, together we can learn faster and become more inspired, be braver and build on the knowledge and experiences we share.
So all you artists and art-lovers out there, join our quest, participate, share and let us find out together, how to make a living from art.
As Winston Churchill said:
If it´s not for the arts, then why should we fight a war for?
